The Dreamer by Pam Munoz Ryan is a fictionalized biography of Chilean poet and activist Pablo

Neruda. It is beautifully written with gorgeous language and imagery. It has excerpts of Neruda's

poetry and sketches that match the poems. It was informative and compelling. I think kids can

relate to the main character's desperate attempts to live up to his father's expectations and his

realization that he might be better off living up to his own expectations.
